The David L. Kurtz AIR Award for
Broadcast Leadership - 2006

2006 Honoree David L. Kurtz, Founder of WBEB (B101)
"Dave Kurtz is the perfect choice for the Leadership Award. He embodied all of the qualities of a leader. An honorable man, Dave showed us every day with quiet confidence, how to move forward, while always remaining true to himself. Dave Kurtz is what leadership is all about."
-- B101 General Manager Blaise Howard remarks at the AIR Awards, 11/1/06

Dave was a decade and a half into his career as an electronics engineer when he launched WDVR in May 1963 (read article from Philco News). At the time FM radio was of no interest to advertisers or listeners but Dave's vision of the future turned out to be correct. With partner Jerry Lee, Dave built a legendary radio station, known later as WEAZ and now the legendary B101, the last major market independent in the country. A more complete bio of Dave Kurtz can be found here. The March of Dimes AIR Awards is proud to salute a true pioneer and true leader. Sadly, Dave lost his battle with cancer in November 2005.

David L. Kurtz Jr. accepts his father's Broadcast Leadership Award on behalf of the Kurtz family.

With deep gratitude for the generosity of the Kurtz family and B101, the AIR Awards Board of Governors is proud to announce that future honorees will receive the David L. Kurtz Broadcast Leadership Award.
