Harry Kalas
will never forget 2002. He was named
winner of the Ford C. Frick Award (given
to a broadcaster who had made major
contributions to the game of baseball)
and recipient of the Lifetime Achievement
Award from the March of Dimes
Philadelphia AIR Awards. Most significant
of all, on July 28th Harry was inducted
into the Baseball Hall Of Fame in
Cooperstown, New York. |
Harry Kalas has graced the
radio business for over 40 years. In the early
1960's he served as Sports Director of KGU radio
in Hawaii, and in 1965 became part of the Houston
Astros original broadcast team. His radio history
also includes University of Houston and Notre
Dame football, Southwest Conference and Big Five
basketball, and since 1971, of course, the
Philadelphia Phillies.
Harry has lent his name and talents to many
charitable causes over the decades. Most notable
among these are The Richie Ashburn Celebrity Golf
Tournament to benefit special-needs scouts of Boy
Scouts Of America, and the Greater Philadelphia
Chapter of the ALS ("Lou Gehrig's
disease") Association.
In 1983 Harry met an ALS patient and vowed to do
anything he could to help strike out ALS. He's
the "voice of the ALS Association" and
consistently makes appearances on behalf of the
Association's work to find a cure. He has MC'ed
every Chapter luncheon since 1985 and has donated
speaking fees to ALS research. Since it began in
1989 Harry has served as host of the Phillies
Charities Autograph Party & Auction. In
total, Phillies Charities has raised over $6.5
million for research and patient services.
